These Creepy Cakes Of Disembodied Heads, And Human Organs Are Disturbingly Delicious
Mmmmm, brainsss. It's not just zombies who think that, not when it comes to Katherine Dey's cakes. Dey has turned making creepy cakes into an artform and her culinary creations feature all kinds of realistic horrors, from headless pigeons to dead rats, disembodied organs, a lamprey, and—horror of horrors—Elmo.
They're a cross between sculptures and confectionary and they definitely taste better than they look. Dey's day job is a nurse but she like to bake freaky and grotesque cakes as a hobby.
"I love that strange feeling I get when something looks real but it isn’t." she told Buzzfeed recently. "Or when a cake doesn’t look particularly appetizing but it is a cake and it tastes delicious. I like to make people feel two conflicting things at once."
As well as the more frightful creations Dey also does cake portraiture (she made a bust of her dad in cake form) and has created a cake that looks like a Thanksgiving roast turkey. And one that looks like honeycomb with bees crawling over it.
“The reaction is usually a strong one. Some people are excited about them, some people are a little disgusted." she notes to Buzzfeed, but she also says "no matter how disgusted some people may be, in the end no one has refused to eat the cake.”
