Gouged Eyeballs, Mutilated Hands: Marc Clancy Is A Dark Master Of Gruesome & Grisly Special Effects
Where was Marc Clancy when I needed him at Halloween last year? Clancy is a self-taught makeup artist who specializes in horribly bloody and macabre special effects. He has a YouTube channel Powdah FX where he gives tutorials along with an Instagram page where he posts the results of his grisly makeup art.
Scrolling down the page is like looking at some kind of hospital ward from a war zone or the mutilated cast of a horror movie. There are sliced fingers, compound fractures, gouged eyeballs, zombie fingernails, skin lacerations, torn lips, severed bones, and fleshy ligaments on show.
It's not for the faint hearted. In fact, you may well find yourself retching as you scroll through some of the very realistic-looking makeup. This is old school practical effects, done with seriously good craft and skill.
The makeup art is just a hobby for Clancy, who is a graphic designer by trade. In an interview with Hauntopolis Clancy reveals some of the materials he uses to create the effects:
Well I’ve used banana as body fat, red wool/yarn as vein work, I use bees wax a lot to create prosthetic bone, red fringing from the bottom of curtains to create streams of blood, I’ve injected latex with hair gel to create blisters, I’ve filled wounds with just about everything most people would put on their toast in the morning.

When people ask me what books or things to read to get in to SFX I'd say invest some time and money in good anatomical books and reference material. Also, go back and try old makeups to see how you'd approach them differently 12 months later with that knowledge.
