John Oliver Recruits Nick Offerman, Laverne Cox, & Other Comedians To Make An Honest Sex Ed PSA
Sex education videos are notoriously cringeworthy and, worse, not really that educational. On a recent episode of his show Last Week Tonight John Oliver looked at the woeful state of American sex education.
The show started with Oliver showing some ridiculous and baffling sex ed videos, including one featuring Breaking Bad's Mike Ehrmantraut which, as well as being hilarious, were used to illustrate a sad truth. "There is no required standard for sex ed in this country," Oliver noted. "In fact, only 22 states mandate that kids receive it, and only 13 require that the information presented be medically accurate."
Which means that, for instance, in some states (which often have high teen pregnancy rates) they're not even taught about how to put on condoms. While others would rather just teach abstinence—which realistically is never going to be adhered to—rather than useful information about safe sex.
So Oliver decided to do something about it. He recruited some of the country's best comedians and made his own sex ed video starring Jonathan Banks, Laverne Cox, Jack McBrayer, Megan Mullay, Kumail Nanjiani, Nick Offerman, Kristen Schall, and Aisha Tyler.
It definitely needs to be shown in every school in the country.
