Twitter's Response To The Oscars Diversity Issue Is Hilarious - #MakeAMovieWhiter

The Oscars have come under fire this year, and rightfully so, for not being representative when it comes to its actor nominations. Namely that for the second year running every actor nominated, both male and female, is white. The Academy Awards are due to take place next month on February 28th.

Because of this, notable black actors and directors—Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, Spike Lee, and more—are boycotting the ceremony, and there's even calls by Rev Al Sharpton’s National Action Network for Chris Rock to step away from hosting the show. Although others, Don Cheadle for instance, say he should host so he can use it to highlight the problem and take the Academy and Hollywood to task.

Even President Obama has added his voice to this issue saying the Oscar debate is an expression of a broader issue: "Are we making sure that everybody is getting a fair shot?"

Because of this #OscarsSoWhite has been a prominent hashtag on Twitter, which people have been using to share their opinions and distaste with Hollywood's diversity issues—and now another hashtag has joined it. This one aims to address the problem through humor.

It started with @midnight who tweeted, "This years Oscars are whiter than a polar bear at an NPR party so tonight we're playing #MakeAMovieWhiter. Play!"

And so #MakeAMovieWhiter was born and Twitter took to the challenge admirably, coming up with some hilarious puns to satirise the Academy's problematic decisions.
