McDonald's Have Actually Brought Back Their Szechuan Sauce Because Of Rick And Morty
It started out as a joke, but now McDonald's have brought back their Szechuan sauce all thanks to Rick and Morty. It all started back on 1st April 2017 with episode 1 of season 3 of the show titled "The Rickshank Rickdemption". It centers around Rick's incarceration at the Galactic Federation's prison and his bid to escape before they can discover the secret to his portal gun by interrogating him with mental images from his past.
One of the co-creators of Rick and Morty, Justin Roiland, really used to love the Szechuan sauce that came out as a limited edition McNugget plum dip when Disney's Mulan movie was out in 1998. So in the episode they featured it in a flashback to a fake memory of Rick's, in which he discloses how tasty it is and how he misses it.
Then, right at the end of the episode, the brilliant scientist/high-functioning alcoholic goes on a crazy rant about how it's going to be his 9 season arc to get some McDonald's Szechuan sauce—no matter what.
"That’s my one arm man. I’m not driven by avenging my dead family Morty, that was FAKE! I-I’m driven by finding that, McNugget Sauce." he says. "I want that Mulan McNugget Sauce, Morty. That’s my series arc Morty! If it takes 9 seasons, I WANT MY MCNUGGET DIPPING, SAUCE SZECHUAN SAUCE MORTY! THAT’S WHAT'S GONNA TAKE US, ALL THE WAY TO THE END MORTY! SEASON, 9 MORE SEASONS MORTY! 9 MORE SEASONS UNTIL I GET THAT DIPPING SZECHUAN SAUCE!"
When Szechuan Sauce Fantasy Becomes Reality
It was a pretty funny way to end the first episode of season 3, but it also really caught on with a lot of Rick and Morty fans, who started demanding the Szechuan sauce's return. Even a McDonald's chef (Chef Mike) got involved and tweeted that he would see what he could do.
Well, it looks like it wasn't just idle tweeting, because McDonald's sent Justin Roiland his own jug of Szechuan sauce, just in time for the airing of season 3 episode 2 which was on 30th July.
Lucky Fans Get McDonald's Szechuan Sauce
The label of the jug and a note from Chef Mike that came with it, even featured some Rick and Morty jokes and references, claiming the sauce was brought back from dimension C-1998M where it's 1998 all the time.
It also said, "A few lucky fans will also get to experience the glory, but the first bottle in this dimension is for you." McDonald's then tweeted the below.
It seems some lucky fans who tweeted about Szechuan sauce won themselves one of these jugs, but there are no plans just yet to bring it back into the food chain's restaurants. But never say never. "For now, only a limited amount of Szechuan Sauce got through from the always-1998 dimension." said a McDonald's spokesperson in a statement. "Who knows where space-time will take us because when our customers speak, we listen."
McDonald's Fulfill The Rick And Morty 9 Season Arc
Along with this, the Szechuan sauce also sparked off an interesting exchange between the official Rick and Morty and the official McDonald's twitter accounts. With McDonald's addressing the fact that they've fulfilled the 9 season arc by delivering the sauce.
