Photographer's Breastfeeding Series Challenges Taboos And Celebrates The Mother Child Bond
As natural as it is, breastfeeding is still a challenging issue. Whether it's people complaining about mother's breastfeeding in public or Facebook taking down photos of mothers breastfeeding, it's kind of bizarre that something women have been doing for centuries should be so controversial in the 21st century.
To counteract the negativity, and as a reaction to the shaming that accompanied the uploading of her breastfeeding self-portrait, photographer Melina Nastazia decided to dedicate a series to mothers nursing their children.
Titled Breastfeeding Stories - Moments of Motherhood Nastazia's images capture and celebrate the beauty of the act of breastfeeding and the bond it creates.
Not that she's one of these women who feel every mother should breastfeed. She just wants to destigmatize those who do.
"Breastfeeding has always been a topic I hold close to my heart. I find the miraculous way our bodies can grow, birth and nourish babies simply fascinating." she writes on Bored Panda. "After three babies of my own, I know first hand that breastfeeding is not always simple or easy. It presents a series of challenges that range from physical to emotional. It is not for every mother, or for every child. Sometimes it isn’t even a choice. I respect and support the difficult decisions all mamas make to provide what is best for their babies."
