Pop Quotery Is Where Fine Art Paintings Meet Movie Quotes For Some Inter-Cultural Mashups
If you ever wondered how one of the masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, might pair with a quote from Jaws, Instagram account Pop Quotery has got you covered.
Or maybe you're kept awake at night pondering what painting from the popular Pre-Raphaelite artist John William Waterhouse (just pretend like you know him) would work with a Back To The Future quote (it's "The Lady of Shalott," btw). If so, then Pop Quotery is the place to head to.
It's also a chance to get to look at some classical art, which you would otherwise avoid like the plaque, and lets face it, when was the last time you went to an art gallery? Be honest.
And you get to have a cultural laugh at the same time. It's a win-win situation.
The account, run by San Francisco-based artist Marcel, does a great job of matching movie quotes and fine art. It might be a strange concept, there's not many places where, say This is Spinal Tap and Caravaggio co-exist, but it works.
"I love movies. Growing up in the '80s and '90s means my formative years were shaped by some (now) classics like the works of John Hughes and Ivan Reitman, and more recently the brilliant work from people like the Cohen [sic] Brothers and Quentin Tarantino." Marcel told A Plus. "I also love fine art and also spent a lot of time in museums growing up. Merging the two seemed like a natural fit."
