Time To Get Your Groove On For The Department: 80s Electro + New Wave = 'As If Transformed'
Are you ready to get your synthwave groove on? You better be. The Department are a Swedish, Londonish electro, new wave band consisting of Rob Green (vocals and synths) and Magnus Lindström (synths) and this is their debut single "As If Transformed."
The music video mocks the often ridiculously glitzy makeup adverts that pollute our lives and combines this with some mix and match aesthetics. So we get different body parts combined like some kind of bizarre children's game. Except these feature far more NSFW juxtapositions.
The video's produced by OneRedEye agency and directed by Ed Robinson and features Lebanese model Karen El-khazen.
And, if there are any fans of the eclectic musical stylings of The The you might recognise Zeke Manyika, drummer from the band who played on their classic album Soul Mining, who makes an appearance. As does Barbara Alcindor, singer from dance-pop group French Affair.
Rob Green and Magnus LindströmThe band mix Magnus Lindström's synth skills with Rob Green's musical pedigree. Lindström plays in Swedish electro band Mr. Jones Machine and has a collection of classic analogue synths in his Gothenburg studio.
Rob Green's musical background takes in making progressive house records back in the mid-90s, played by the likes of Pete Tong and Sasha, along with DJing in legendary club The Hacienda.
As well as featuring in the early British EDM scene he's a big fan of The Cure, The Smiths, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, The The and New Order.
Still from the music video"Our supporters have compared us to many bands of the 80s, but if I was asked to describe us, I would say: 'Imagine if The Smiths and The Cure were fused into a two-piece electronic band—The Department is a little bit like that."
You can reach the band on their website, Facebook and Soundcloud.
