The 7th Annual Surf City Surf Dog Competition In Huntington Beach Saw Some Cute Hot-Dogging
If you were at Huntington Beach in California this past weekend, you would have seen a peculiar sight on the seas. The sight of surfing dogs. It was all part of the seventh annual Surf City Surf Dog competition which took place at the beach.
The surfing hounds, which from the looks of it are actually pretty Bodhi about the whole thing, are judged on various skills from how long they ride the wave to how confident they are. They wear doggy life jackets too because inevitably they're going to come off and they need to be safe.
Over 60 pets showed off their surfing prowess, competing based on their weight. Categories where winners are declared include Best Wipeout, Best Crowd Pleaser, Shredder.
But these dogs don't just turn up on the day and jump on the board, they train for the event because they're dedicated pooches. "First the dog has to love the water, that's one of the biggest things, and then balance." the owner of a pit bull terrier called Faith told International Business Times. "There's various ways you can train the dog on balance. What we did was we took her to the bay area where it's calm water, put her on a board, got her used to the balance and slowly progressed into waves. And here she is now."
Indeed. Here's a list of the winners. And below is what you came here to see, dogs on frikkin' surfboards. Raaad.
